The Calumet Wolverines put 57 shots on goal Saturday night at the Calumet Colosseum. Mosinee goaltender Hunter Christjohn stopped 55 of them, and the Papermakers left with an 11-2 win.
Nathan Londo scored both Calumet goals. That gives him five goals in his first two games as a Wolverine, the most in the Great Lakes Hockey League.
Calumet outshot Mosinee 18-11 in the first period but went into the break down 4-0. The Papermakers scored three more early in the second. Londo put Calumet on the board at 8:00, finishing a play set up by Gabe Coppo and Carson Kariniemi. After a Mosinee power-play goal, Londo scored again at 13:25 on a Calumet power play, with assists from Logan Rastello and Sherman Mowery, to make it 8-2.
The Wolverines kept pushing in the third and outshot Mosinee 24-15 in the period, but Christjohn stopped all 24. Calumet finished with a 57-43 edge in shots. Devon Blaes scored four goals for Mosinee and Brad Gicopoulos had three goals and four assists. Dan Wroblewski made 32 saves for Calumet.
Mowery’s assist gives him five points (two goals, three assists), which ties him for third in the GLHL with Londo and Dylan Boberg. Logan Rastello’s four assists are tied for second in the GLHL, and Gabe Coppo has three.
Thank you to The U.P. Pub for sponsoring game day and to everyone who came out in costume on Halloween night.
Road trip: three games in three days
The Wolverines (1-1) head to Wisconsin this weekend for their first road trip of the season. They’ll play three games in three days against teams they haven’t faced yet this season.
Fri., Nov. 6 at Fox Cities Ice Dogs, 8:30 p.m. at Community First Champion Center. This is the Ice Dogs’ regular-season opener. Their only game so far was an Oct. 30 exhibition at Fond du Lac.
Sat., Nov. 7 at Fond du Lac Bears, 9 p.m. at Blue Line Family Ice Center. This is also Fond du Lac’s regular-season opener. The Bears have played two exhibitions, against the Kenosha Knights on Oct. 16 and Fox Cities on Oct. 30.
Sun., Nov. 8 at Milwaukee Timberwolves, noon at Sheboygan Lakers Ice Center. The Timberwolves (0-1) lost 9-5 at the M&M Shamrocks on Oct. 31. They host McFarland Saturday night, so both teams will be playing for the second straight day. For Calumet it’s the third game in three days.
After the trip, Calumet faces Portage Lake at Dee Stadium on Dec. 4. The Wolverines return to the Colosseum Dec. 12 against Fond du Lac.
All times Eastern.
